History at LSU

The history of Louisiana Epsilon is almost as old as the fraternity itself. Epsilon was founded January 1, 1867, by Charles H. Reed at Louisiana Seminary in Alexandria (the predecessor of Louisiana State University). Our history gives credit for the idea of founding a new chapter to a "true SAE girl" with whom Reed was smitten. Reed petitioned for a charter and installed Epsilon's charter members : Samuael H. Lewis, Henry A. McCollam, J.H. Eady, Joseph Peirson, T.F. Montgomery, V. Montgomery, and T.B. Edwards. Becoming the first fraternity on campus and the eighteenth chapter of the fraternity, Epsilon thrived and in 3 short years initiated 24 fine young fellows as loyal sons of Minerva. After a magnificent start, Epsilon was ordered closed by the superintendent in 1869 and passed into a deep sleep not to awaken until 1897.

At the convention of 1896 in St. Louis, Epsilon rose from its slumber and was re-granted a charter from the national fraternity. Louisiana Epsilon and Louisiana Tau Upsilon (Tulane) were the only chapters chartered at the St. Louis Convention. Epsilon was reinstalled on January 21, 1897 at the Verandah Hotel. The refounding fathers were Roger P. Swire, Julius H. Alford, Gordon B. Nicholson, Edwin R. Barrow, Dwight N. Smith, Edmund A Chavanne, Louis M. Holmes, George C. Schoenberger, William S. Slaughter, William B. Yaylor, Emerson W. Singletery, and Thomas M. Davis. A key member of the initiation team was George H. (Harry) Bunting! Legend holds that the men celebrated by serenading the "fair young women of the community" who had aided in their efforts!

Until a tragedy in 1997, Epsilon was a unique force at Louisiana State University. It was at several times the largest chapter in the realm, excelling in all aspects of university life. They built a beautiful home in 1940 and some of our current alumni remember the dedication. Although we no longer possess the home, it stands as a monument to the commitment of our alumni and our history at Louisiana State University. We have a vision of the future and a respect for the past. We will add the names of our new brothers as refounders of Epsilon and the continuation of a legacy of friendship, honor, loyalty, and fraternity!
