Major General William G. Bowdon, III, is a native of Alexandria. He graduated from LSU in 1970, and enlisted in the Marine Corps. After reporting for duty he received his wings and was ordered for duty as a flight instructor. He attended the Amphibious Warfare School, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and National War College.
Major General Bowdon commanded Marine forces in the United States and foreign countries including Japan and the Western Pacific. He served as Commanding General of Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, NC, and Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, CA. His last billet was as Commanding General, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, CA.
Major General Bowdon's personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
Major General Bowdon is retired from active military service and lives in Baton Rouge. He serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of the LSU Foundation and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Epsilon Housing Corporation. In his spare time he enjoys, golf, hunting, fishing and spending time with his wife and their two sons. He has enjoyed working with LSU school officials and the progress they have jointly made to make it a national flagship university.
